Elected in 2005, I have had the privilege of serving on Albuquerque’s City Council for nearly fourteen years. (I represented the southern part of our district as councilor for “old” District 3 until 2013, and City Council District 2 for the last six years.)
On the Council, I have supported responsible economic growth, sustainable and high-quality infill development, small and large quality of life projects for our neighborhoods, accountable public safety, improved public transportation, streets made for all users, and workforce housing. I have fought against suburban sprawl development, and for progressive legislation like sick leave and flex time, increasing the minimum wage, decriminalizing marijuana, gun safety, and an immigrant-friendly city.
With the election of Mayor Keller in 2017, we turned a new page in Albuquerque. Mayor Keller shares my values about investing in and improving Albuquerque’s city center and our traditional and historic communities. I’ve been proud to partner with his administration to bring about change that benefits our neighborhoods and families.
I am running for reelection because we need strong and experienced leaders familiar with the needs of our community. You can trust I will continue to be the strong, progressive advocate you know.
I am running as a publicly financed candidate, which is Albuquerque’s clean election program that helps reduce the influence of outside special interests and allows candidates more time meeting voters. I’ve used this good government program for each of my elections since 2009.
We are a grassroots—meaning people driven— campaign. Strong support from dedicated volunteers is our not-so-hidden secret. I would be grateful to have you involved in my campaign today!
Issac “Ike” Benton
Albuquerque City Councilor
